It’s the season of the Brussels sprout now, and I’m loving it. When the other crops begin to succumb to crunchy, sparkly frosts, and dinner time is after dark, the Brussels spouts and I drink deeply and grow fuller.
Oh hey, it’s Sam this week with the news from Dancing Rabbit. It seems to me that it’s been kind of a slow news week around here. If you got our annual summary a few days ago (here’s a link if you didn’t:
Many folks are taking time “off farm” as we say, for travel. Some go to share time with friends and family, some to do income work, some to do the mission work of Dancing Rabbit, and some for recreation and self care. This happens every year; the population dwindles in the winter to just a core group. It’s like the village pulls in to itself, tucking in for a quiet reflective season. I’m glad that this year I’ll be here for the whole season, to fully enjoy that refreshing feeling. Some people hardly ever leave farm, though: this week we marked three years that Coz has been here, without being off the property overnight at all. He celebrated with a dance party at the Casa.
Despite the wintery feeling I’m beginning to get, it’s still fall, and this week we had a spate of warm weather, and a pretty wild storm with very strong winds and hail. Nobody’s roof blew off, though, or other calamities, aside from some formerly dry laundry getting rained on.
During the nice weather Josi had a couple of friends up from St. Louis, who got to help out with the Critters’ critters, and Rae and Illly’s house. Josi reports that they had a lot of fun, and will be back. The sense from the community is that we will be glad to see them again.
You might have seen that The Grocery Store and The Milkweed Mercantile were trying to qualify for a grant called “Mission Main Street.” Great news! The Mercantile did qualify and now goes on to the final decision round in which judges choose which businesses get the grant. Should they win, the Milkweeds plan to use the money for workshops, webinars, and more paid staff. I really hope they get picked, it would be a boon for DR and for the whole planet.
