First Leaf of Spring, 1/23/13

These chickens were a little disappointed when the snow went away. They just have to wait until next time.
At DR we govern ourselves by consensus. Many of our decisions are made via email. A committee or other entity will have an idea, talk with folks and think really hard abut how to turn the idea into something awesome happening, and then send out a proposal for the rest of us to read and remark on if we feel so moved. If we like it, we do it, if we want to make changes, we work together to come up with something everyone can live with.

This week a few proposals came out over email.

One proposal of particular interest is from the ELM Committee, who run our local currency, with the idea that we users of the local currency will let the vehicle co-op use some of our funds toward the purchase of a Nissan Leaf. The Leaf is an all electric 5 seat car that will add capacity to our fleet, and purpose to our generous arrays of solar panels. The proposal passed. The Leaf is on its way.

There’s another proposal out regarding a level of standardization of the wexer experience. For those of you new to our column, “wexer” is our word for work-exchanger, someone who works on a project at DR in exchange for their living expenses. Folks are still commenting on the proposal, and pretty soon we’ll have something agreed on as far as what a person can expect from a Dancing Rabbit wex experience, regardless of who their host is and when they come.

That decision is timed to coincide with the availability of the applications for this year’s wexing positions. You can now access this year’s application and view the opportunities that are available here: www.dancingrabbit.org/visit-dancing-rabbit-ecovillage/work-exchange/. There’s quite a variety this year.

In other news, it snowed. It’s cold. We’re having winter this year, which is refreshing after last year. We didn’t get to go sledding this week, but a mishap on Main Street left us with a tiny skating rink convenient to the mailboxes. It’s cold enough that twice lately I’ve woken up to find my electronics had lost all their charge overnight. It’s a good thing I have a reliable gravity-powered cuckoo clock. Just so long as gravity doesn’t give out.

We’re always thinking ahead, and the gardeners’ club, seed swaps, tree orders, and even a beautiful garden gate for the under construction community gardens are all in the works.

Lots of folks are missing this cold snap as they’re away visiting family and friends. Skyhouse is almost empty. A few old familiar faces are around now; they traveled to see us. Jess is visiting with her friend, and Liat is on her way.

This is Sam, hoping you stay warm! Best wishes until next time.
