Raising the Bar(n): A Bartender’s Perspective

by Sammy Jo I really love the wonderfully unique perspective of our village that I get from behind the bar at the Milkweed Mercantile. As you can imagine, the conversations I engage in and overhear on a weekly basis are worthy of a blog post in their own right. Everything from relationship dynamics to butchering techniques to quantum physics has been discussed during my shifts. If those straw bale walls could talk… well then I suppose we would remember a lot more of our amazing ideas. (And we’d be famous for having talking walls!) But of all the conversations I…read more >

Help Us Spread the Word + Special Offer

We know our visitor program has a profound impact on people who attend, because so many of them have told us so over the years. This year we're having a harder time getting the word out about it, though, due to Facebook’s algorithm changes and new Google Ads requirements. If you’re not sure what those words mean, it boils down to it being more difficult for small, non-corporate organizations like ours to be seen online. We really want people to be able to learn about and connect with Dancing Rabbit, so while we're working on ways to increase our visibility…read more >
Sometimes the Grass Really is Greener: A Dancing Rabbit Update

Sometimes the Grass Really is Greener: A Dancing Rabbit Update

I love the month of March. Every year, as winter cold dissolves into spring, I find myself amazed at the sheer heartiness and determination it must take for plants and animals to survive a climate that turns against them for months on end. I’m reminded of the creativity and strength of will our ancestors must have had to possess in order to survive and thrive without so many of the technological advances we enjoy today. Lucas here, contemplating the spirit of the grass as it sprouts up through the scorched landscape of a recent prescribed burn site here at Dancing…read more >

Good Soil to Grow In: A Dancing Rabbit Update

Good morning, dear readers! Lucas here, and I’m going to be a bit selfish today, and share some personal news and perspective with you. Technically, this IS news about Dancing Rabbit, but instead of focusing on village happenings as a whole, I find my thoughts can’t wander too far or wide these days, as my partner and I are GOING TO HAVE A BABY!!! In July. Not, like... right now. Don’t freak out yet. At least, that’s what I’m telling myself. My partner and I have been together for over two years, and I honestly could not imagine a better…read more >

Boisterous, Joyous, and Cold: A Dancing Rabbit Update

Merry (forthcoming) Christmas and Happy Holidays from Lucas, at Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage!! I'm pleased to be back writing to each and every one of you after an exceptionally busy warm season, a season I now find myself missing (and anticipating) as I look outside and shiver. This cold is for the birds. Penguins, specifically. Every fall I find myself anticipating a break over the cold months that never quite seems to manifest—much like the busy lifestyle I had prior to joining this community. However, I also find my attitude towards it quite different than before; I feel more positive about…read more >

Moving On: A Letter from the Executive Director

Dear friends and supporters, It is with a profound mix of sadness and excitement that I share with you the news that I will be stepping down as the Executive Director of the Center for Sustainable and Cooperative Culture in late 2016. Everyone always says this kind of thing when they write this kind of letter, but for real: it’s been an amazing, growthful journey for me, and I am incredibly grateful to all of you for supporting us as we’ve grown this vibrant, impactful nonprofit the past three years. In the time since I stepped into the Executive Director…read more >

Not Hibernating (Yet)! A Dancing Rabbit Update

Like rabbits in the wild, those at Dancing Rabbit do not hibernate in the winter.  Sure, there’re fewer visitors and less outdoor work to do, but there’re always board meetings! Zach here, reporting live from somewhat of a flurried week.  No, not snow.  It’s been unseasonably warm, which has meant extra time for building and a longer-than-usual growing season.  In the latter of those two, I can speak to a bumper crop of radishes, mustard greens, and bok choy at the Thistledown kitchen.  Mild weather has meant fewer fires and less hot cocoa – so far. In the former of…read more >
