No. 8
Susan and Erik have constructed a wood-framed home on their
new warren. They began construction in the fall of 2002, and
made it to a liveable condition before winter. They worked on
it for 4 months; Erik worked part-time on the house for the
first 2 months, and then switched to full-time work on the cabin
for the last 2 months.
The construction of the house is a bit unconventional for DR.
It does not include strawbale as a building component. Instead,
it focuses on using reclaimed lumber. The lumber came from several
sources - a barn, an old factory, and wooden pallets. The structure
is 16'X16' with 6 inch walls of blown in cellulose insulation.
The residence has a sleeping loft in the northern side. The
interior walls are made of standard sheet rock.
Next let's take a quick look at the outhouse.
