Outhouse

At DR we're committed to recycling, and that includes our human waste. We use a system outlined in "The Humanure Handbook." We collect our waste in five gallon buckets, covering it with sawdust, and then compost it for 2 years in a compost bin. During that time aerobic decomposition raises the temperature high enough to kill all pathogens that would potentially be dangerous to humans. In theory the resulting compost can be used on our gardens, but to be safe we only use it on fruit trees and ornamentals. Unlike some conventional outhouses, ours doesn't smell of anything but sawdust.
