Allium

Allium was the first building we built at DR. It was started in 1998 and we lived in it that winter, but didn't pronounce it completely "finished" until 2001 when we completed the plaster and hung the curtains. To see photos of Allium's wall raising click here.

Like Bella Ciao, Allium is a load bearing straw bale house. It has earthen plaster inside and an earthen floor. Its exterior is an earthen plaster with a lime plaster finish.

Allium is owned by Rachel. Allium is named after the family of plants that includes garlic and onions. It got the name after a sculpture of a garlic bulb was put in the plaster to hide some electrical wiring.
