The House You'll Help Complete:

This natural building project involves a significant addition to my timber framed cabin, below.

The 2010 intern year will feature work on interior details of the addition, exterior shown to the right and below, as well as finish exterior details including an outdoor kitchen.

 

Adding nearly twice the square footage as the original cabin, this addition will provide housing for 5-6 people.

Nestled inside a pedestrian neighborhood, the design has a strong spatial relationship with the original cabin as well as the neighboring buildings.

 

Sustainable Building Design Features:

  • Locally harvested and reclaimed Lumber
  • Locally obtained Straw, Clay, and Sand
  • Reclaimed and rejected Windows & Doors
  • Natural Plasters and Floors
  • Passive Solar Heating w/ use of Thermal Mass
  • Solar Electricity and Hot Water
  • Solar and Wood Supplementary Heat System
  • Spatial Relationship with Neighboring Buildings
  • Continuity between Original Structure and Addition.

In addition to gaining valuable natural building experience, you will be immersed in community life here at Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage.

You'll be able to partake in:

  • A variety of community events and activities (parties, games, dance, song circles, social gatherings, skinny dipping, potlucks, etc.)

  • Eating seasonal and organic meals (largely vegetarian or vegan whole foods) in a food co-op with Dancing Rabbit members

  • Enjoying nature on 280 beautiful acres in rural Missouri.

Your Qualifications and Experience:

If you are

  • Responsible,
  • A team player,
  • Able to solve problems,
  • A strong communicator, and can do so openly, honestly, and respectfully,
  • Have a strong interest in sustainable design and natural building
  • Capable of regularly doing physically demanding work,

You will be a good fit for this internship.

 

Here are thre additional factors that will play a strong role in who I select:

  • A strong work ethic.
  • An ability to assume responsibility for areas of work.
  • Interest in working on the project for the full building season.

 

Prospective interns should have some Previous Experience in one of the following areas:

  • Construction
  • Natural building
  • Carpentry
  • Building Design
  • Electrical and/or Plumbing Experience
  • Alternative Energy Systems

 

The internship begins on April 3, 2010

and continues through September 2010.

I’m looking for a total of 3-4 interns at any time.

Applications are currently being distributed, and will be available until the positions are filled.

Jennifer assists in directing the timber frame raising work party for the mortise and tenon framing structure.

Summary of What You'll Get:

  • Food: Full food stipend. You will be part of a organic vegan food co-op during your stay.
  • Accommodations: Tenting space provided and shared facilities available for use. Our indoor facility, the Common House is complete with kitchen, showers, composting toilets, phone, internet, library, and social space. The timber frame addition is also available for limited use.
  • Fees: Payment of all Dancing Rabbit associated fees.
  • Transportation: If you come to Dancing Rabbit by train or bus, and  then I’ll pick you up at the nearest station at no cost to you. Other travel to Dancing Rabbit and during your stay is at your expense.
  • Education and skills: You will gain both hands-on experience and a working knowledge on a cornicopia of building techniques and systems through the completion of sustainably designed natural building. You will also learn how to live a sustainable lifestyle while living and working cooperatively with others. Through a project focus on design, beauty, quality, and responsibillity, you will develop a variety of artistic and leadership qualities.


Summary of Your Responsibilities and Qualifications:

  • Your work load: 35 hours per week learning and working on a natural building project and 3 cookshifts per week, (one breakfast, lunch, and dinner, though not all on the same day), as well as one additional kitchen duty per week.
  • Your experience and attitude: strong work ethic, construction skills, responsibility, attention to detail, desire to learn, enthusiasm, and a good spirit.
  • Additional responsibilities to the community. As a temporary resident of the community, you will partake in community responsibilities such as cleaning and chore rotations.
