The Long Journey Home

by Rachel Freifelder

I lit out from Reno, I was hauling many pounds....

Sometime in April, I forget exactly when, my partner Mitch and I picked up a Ryder truck in Portland, OR, loaded it up with Communities Directories at Alpha Farm, picked up our belongings from a friend's garage in Oakland, CA, and drove out to Rutledge to be with the other Rabbits. And we all lived happily ever after.

Of course it wasn't nearly so simple. We actually had three trucks, as the first two broke down on us, each time delaying us a day or more. Once we got the third truck, we had 4 days to get from Reno to Rutledge, unload, and return the truck. At 7 miles a gallon we burned over 400 gallons of gas and dumped some frightening amount of carbon monoxide into the atmosphere. Being trapped in a motor vehicle was incredibly stressful on both of us Bay Area bike activists. One activity which kept us occupied was figuring out how we could have done the move better. We concluded that the best plan would have been to take things slower, spend a few days cutting down our possessions to those that were worth shipping, and then ride our bikes out. We enthusiastically suggest this method for anyone energetic enough to consider it. There's no better way to see the country.

Now I live in a trailer with no privacy and not enough storage space, Mitch had to go home to his family for a while, my possessions are still in boxes in four different places, I don't really feel moved in, and life is generally unstable. But I'm still really glad to have arrived, to be the most recent resident of Skyhouse Community, to put a lot of energy into gardening, to renew my connections with the group and to get to know Jack. More importantly, I'm incredibly excited to get started on creating the dream we've been visioning for the last four years.
