We got LOTS of responses to our Summer Puzzler question, which was: What are some businesses that people at Dancing Rabbit could start up in order to maintain a steady income? Not surprisingly, most folks offered web-based business ideas. Ideas included working on or selling a survey system, grading tests online, creating and selling ebooks of plans for projects we've done, selling products and services to help people retire early, creating an ecologically sound light bulb store, selling organic native and/or heirloom seeds, selling articles to ezines about what we're doing, selling photos of our community, and online English teaching. One DR village resident, Jacque, has already gotten a job doing the last based on a suggestion received, and others may do so as well. Wow! Non-web-based ideas included writing eco-educational children's books, charging for DR tours, having a bed and breakfast or campground or retreat/spa, and organic cotton or soybean farming. We received many suggestions for things we could sell, including soy candles, pressed or fresh flowers, hand-decorated organic clothing, and handmade jewelry.
And now, the runner-up for Editor's Favorite Idea..."Dancing Rabbit: The Music Video"!
But, the first place award goes to Julie B., who wrote: "Here is an offbeat income-producing possibility: Start a green burial ground. See www.memorialecosystems.com for more information. There's more information on the web under 'green burial' or 'natural burial.' Obviously, this would require a piece of land first. There is a new green burial ground starting near us in Ithaca, NY on 30 acres. As you're in a more remote location, though, perhaps it would be hard to find enough 'customers.' (On the other hand, think of what an appealing recruiting tool this could be: Free Burial with Membership!)"
