Map of Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage: October 2003

(Note: a description of the map is below the image.)

This is a map of Dancing Rabbit at its current stage of growth. Dancing Rabbit is currently working hard to create a set of Land Use Planning guidelines that will help us shape our future development as a village. Basically, the village will be a collection of neighborhoods loosely grouped around a town center. The village will be densest at the center, gradually (though not regularly) decreasing in density as one moves towards the periphery. "Fingers" of land unused by humans will extend into the built portion of the village, to bring green, or more wild, space, closer in and to aid wildlife in feeling welcome in our midst.

Gardening and larger scale agriculture will be both integrated with the homes in the village and performed outside the area designated for housing. Setting the boundary of the to-be-built area is a perennially hot topic and it's up for discussion once again! Regardless of what's decided, we hope to have a mix of gardening, farming, animal agriculture, commerce, community buildings, and light industry within a few minutes walk of any point in the village. A town center will be located a little north of the construction you can see on the map, and "Main Street" will lead up to it.

Maps like this one are helping us set these planning guidelines. Key features are the locations of "warrens"--small areas leased to a specific land holder to build their homes, plant gardens, or perform other activities. Planning out warren locations helps us determine neighborhood layout, which in turn helps us decide where roads should go. Of course, all things are connected, and it's not always easy to decide on one piece of the puzzle without having considered all of it.

Stay tuned to these pages for more info about our Land Use Planning!
