Many hours of planning and sitting at the computer for Halle' and Marcee Murray were greatly rewarded by the success of our first Childbirth Assistant training course held at Dancing Rabbit. In late August, nine participants arrived at DR for an intense weekend-long class about pregnancy, labor and birth.
The nine women represented a diverse group of folks. Some had children, some were married, others had partners or were single. Some of the women had attended births other than their own, others were just beginning their interest in women's health. We hope that all of the women left with new knowledge and enthusiasm for improving healthcare for women in their regions.
The classes were held in different areas of DR. Morning sessions took place in the Outdoor Kitchen with a beautiful view of the herb garden in full bloom. Afternoon sessions were held on the grass in our maple grove. The relaxed atmosphere helped everyone to integrate the enormous amount of information presented.
Part of what Marcee and Halle' are going to attempt to improve for the next workshop is a method of conveying the same amount of information without the intensity of ten-hour classes and only a few breaks. Folks expressed interest in hanging out at DR, but there wasn't much free time to be had. A few of the participants also gave us some good feedback about the intensity of the whole weekend, and mentioned that concentration became increasingly difficult as the classes went on.
One of the most challenging aspects of the workshop for the entire community was hosting the total of 25 children and adult families and friends who came to support the participants. Folks from Dancing Rabbit and Sandhill helped to make the time run smoothly. Jonathan baked 15 loaves of bread and Lindsey came over with art supplies to give some structure and fun to the kids' days. Everyone did their part to make the workshop folks feel comfortable in a new place. A few of the participants have even contacted DR about visiting and membership information!
Dancing Rabbit hopes to be a place where workshops of many different types are held. Based on the success of this first effort, we are hopeful and excited about the possibilities that lie in the future for our educational outreach. Thanks to everyone for their incredible support in making the entire class a great success!
