In "Lessons from the Northwest" (May 1995, Vol. 1, Issue 2,
page 4) Rachel Freifelder related her visits to several
Oregon communities, including the venerable Alpha Farm. We
have recently been informed that some of the data regarding
Alpha Farm was inaccurate. In particular, Alpha's income
does not come primarily from Alpha-Bit (their cafe/store);
rather, it is an important source, but several others are
equally important. We believe this was the most
qualitatively significant error. In addition, several
numbers were incorrect. Alpha's 280 acres consist of 200
acres forested and 80 acres clear, not the reverse. The two
postal routes are 70 and 90 miles in length, not 7 and 9.
The commute to Alpha-Bit is one-half hour each way, not one
hour. Finally, and to the author's embarrassment, Alpha is
in the Coast Range of Oregon, not in the Cascades as the
author erroneously wrote. We apologize for these and any
other errors and thank the members of Alpha Farm for bringing
them to our attention.
