Readers sent in several great ideas in response to Sol Mund's article on eco-menstruation options. We're thrilled to include some here. When considering cotton, note that standard cotton production uses more pesticides than any other crop in the US. For info on organic cotton sources contact Jacob at jacob@ic.org.
To add to the options. Diaphragm can work similar to the keeper and if you already have one for birth control, you can avoid an extra expense, I've found it messy to use in a public toilet sitch though. My current favorite? Diaper doublers, basically your rectangle of absorbent cotton, I first used them post birth, but find they do the trick every month and I just wash them out with the diapers, so they are especially convenient for the cloth diaper set. And all mine were given to me is part of the new mom pass along.

My grandmother grew up in east Germany and they didn't have pads or tampons. She used plain old cotton and so do I. It works great!! Not the balls but good old virgin Cotton. You can buy big bags of cotton (or grow your own!!) fairly cheap. You just rip off a chunk and use it like a pad then discard. The vacuum cup deal sounds like a pretty fancy yeast machine (not to mention all other kinds of vaginal infections) and that's no fun! Cotton is sanitary, healthy, easier, and cheap!
