Summer in Swing
 | The new gardens by the old cow pond. |
Sure enough, days got longer and warmer and here we are just past the solstice in a vibrant green wonderland, complete with melodious frogs, fledgling birds, and berries galore. At Dancing Rabbit, of course, summer also means the expansion of our human population with interns, visitors and guests. It's been great having the energy, work and laughter as so many friends, some new and some old, join us. And the added ideas and excitement have resulted in even more cultural activities here. In just one recent week we had group gatherings for birding, outdoor yoga, women's self-defense and empowerment, and plant identification hikes. A super-energetic group of members, guests, and visitors created two "sacred circles" in a grove of maple and osage orange trees a little ways downhill from town center. On top of all that, we recently hosted the biggest party yet to happen on our property for Rachel and Tony's commitment ceremony (see below)!
We also just made an exciting new step forward in building good relations with our neighbors. Rachel has started writing a regular weekly column about us in the local newspaper, the Memphis Democrat. In the same issue as her inaugural article, the first of a series of articles about us appeared. As if that wasn't enough, there was even an editorial about stereotypes and the goodness of our work here. It was quite a splash for us in the local area.
The building projects continue along nicely, changing the face and feel of our little village. Yet, we've also had time to hang up a new hammock or two in the woods for a pleasant Saturday afternoon retreat. That's one glorious way to know that summer really is in swing!
