Meet the interns!
Now in its second year, our internship program is off to a great start as we welcome a whole gaggle of interns. Why we received so few applications from men is a curious fluke that we have yet to explain. In any case, we're excited by the variety of experiences, backgrounds and interests that will be flooding into DR for the summer and have included self-descriptions of some of the folks coming to share the excitement!
- Amy (and Mark and Felicia) - Garden Intern (with family support)
- We reside in Charlotte, NC, and have both always lived in big cities, so these five weeks are going to be quite a new experience! Mark makes his living as a professional actor and Amy works part-time from home as a breastfeeding counselor while caring for amazing, creative 2-yr-old Felicia! We're expecting a baby in November, are very much in love, and are looking forward to experiencing a lifestyle we thus far have only dreamed about. We are also both in a sort of phase of spiritual discovery.
- Anjanette - Archivist Intern
- I'll soon be a graduate of the University of Michigan (my major is in Literature, Biology, and Environmental Studies). I first heard about Dancing Rabbit from some East Winders traveling through Ann Arbor. Since then, I've been intrigued with the history and growth of this promising ecovillage. So, when I found out about the Archiving Internship, I just had to apply. I'm in the process of leaving my community of four years (ICC - the U of M student co-ops) and turning over the leadership to a new group. This has been a little sad, but it's balanced by my excitement about beginning new community work and life at DR before...(who knows what's next...have any ideas, let me know). I'm especially interested in compiling the history of DR and working on some educational and visitor orientation materials.
- Barbara - Garden Intern
- I grew up without cable. My parents still had a rotary phone when I was in high school. I was a cheerleader in eighth grade and a cross country runner in twelfth. Well rounded? My favorite color is yellow.
I wanted to be an astronaut/veterinarian/artist/act-ress when I was young. I got the artist part, tried the actress part (loved it, want to do more), tried the vet part (hated it, can't understand the ethics). I'm still waiting for NASA to call. I exhibit that wonderful libra trait of unbalanced scales. I want to try/know/do everything. My main goal is to find a strong focus so that I can try/know/do all these things. I love carving pumpkins, debating about things that I actually have a clue about, drinking wine while cooking dinner, heights, fixing things (this doesn't always work), and being on the back of a motorcycle. I have a twisted fascination with J. Robert Oppenheimer. It can be said that I actually had my bedroom walls covered with his image. I don't know what I want to be when I grow up. I believe in zero population growth and the idea of extended parenting. No reason, just wanted to play in the dirt. I'm twenty four. Grew up in Flat Rock, MI.
- Jenni - Construction Intern
- Greetings to all! I'm a third year Anthropology student at Lakehead University in Canada, and looking forward to learning more about living respectfully with all things as well as playing at Dancing Rabbit this summer. Much of my life has been spent in the wilderness, and this has resulted with my passions residing within the intricacies of nature. I believe in the tremendous benefits of sustainable living and experiential education thus the reason for my interest in working with Dancing Rabbit. Excitement runs through to my fingertips with thoughts of the summer.
- Jess - General Intern
- Hello all! I'm currently living in Portland, Oregon - teaching sixth graders in an outdoor education program. I recently graduated from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine with a degree in Environmental Studies and Philosophy. I've come to the realization that I've spent 23 years subscribing to an overly-consumptive and materialistic way of life; so I thought I'd give sustainable living a shot. I am looking forward to the challenges of a different lifestyle and reevaluating my personal choices and habits. My passions include environmental conservation, relaxing with good company, being outdoors - preferably away from city-life, my dog (Baloo), country music (as of late), and a plethora of other things. I am in pursuit of "the good life," so to speak, and I anticipate that I'm gaining on her.
- Karin - General Intern
- I am currently attending Hunter College of the City University of New York. I transferred from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro after a year of study. To keep it short, I gave up an athletic
scholarship at UNCG to "save the world" by joining the ANCCC (AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps). After a nice crisp slap of reality I refocused myself into the field of "sustainable development." You can say its to make peace with all the trees I chopped down in the ANCCC, but whatever the reason, my life has taken a 180. After weathering the storms of bureaucracy and community "dis"service with the NCCC, I developed a hard core desire for community and a legitimate lifestyle. So Dancing Rabbit is a major step on my path to self sustainability, as I call it. Over and out.
- Kirsten - General Intern
- Hey everyone! I'm 18 years old, currently living in NYC and I am a freshman at the State University of New York. I do not have a major yet, but I hope to eventually study nutrition. I'm a big fan of biking and go whenever I can escape the city. I also love camping, hiking, scuba diving and just about anything where I can be out in nature. I am not too familiar with the Midwest, so I am really looking forward to working hard and having fun in Missouri! I am really excited to become a part of DR for the summer to learn more about community life and the type of lifestyle which it supports.
- Trish - Construction Intern
- I have spent the past few years dividing my time and energy between studying Outdoor Recreation at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario, leading canoe trips for young offenders and youth at risk, playing didgeridoo and having fun. I like to dream, I like to dance, I like to play music, I like to juggle, I like to eat good vegan food, and most of all, I like to laugh. I believe in living respectfully, which is why I am excited to visit with Dancing Rabbit for a while, so that I can experience an entire community living respectfully with each other and with the environment.
