Community Mama

by Halle Bennett

Hi everyone! Community Mama here with my amazing recipe that will clean out any fridge. Oh yeah, Jack is doing just fine, he has the chicken pox, but only a mild case....so far. Jack also had his first birthday. Look for pictures of him demolishing the cake on our website...they should be up soon.

Several folks who have come through Dancing Rabbit on my cook night have marveled at my simple fridge cleaning recipe LEFTOVER BURGERS, or as I've heard them called HALLE BURGERS. They are quick and easy, and no matter what leftovers you have, they usually end up tasting the same every time. Here we go!!!

LEFTOVER BURGERS
Ingredients:

  • Any leftovers that haven't gone bad (I mean anything! I've been known to use stir fry, cookie dough, and mashed potatoes in the same batch)!
  • Twice as much whole wheat flour as leftovers
  • About 1/2 cup of soy sauce
  • Garlic powder (we use a lot)
  • Any other spice you really like
  • 1/4 cup oil
  • Water in a bowl
Mix all the leftovers together, add the soy sauce, garlic, and other spices. Mix in flour, a little at a time until the mixture is in dry clumps. You can add as much flour as you like, you'll get more burgers that way. Add a little bit of water to the dry mixture until it is pasty. Here's the trick...to form the burgers, wet your hands, mold the mix into patties, then dip the burgers in a bowl of flour to coat the outside. Now the burgers are ready to cook. You can fry them until they are golden brown (this method can get quite hot, not good for a summer meal!), or you can put a generous amount of oil on a cookie sheet and place the burgers on the sheet, turning them over halfway through the cooking process. I serve these with a side of sauerkraut...Yum!!!!
