So you want to become a resident?

by Rachel Katz

You're interested in living at Dancing Rabbit for a season or a year. You want to try out what its like to be a member of Dancing Rabbit without making the commitment or having all the responsibilities. Maybe you even have a special skill you can share or sell to the folks at Dancing Rabbit. Then our new status, Resident, might be perfect for you!

At our retreat this year we created a new way to be at Dancing Rabbit. We found that visitors or interns that have been around awhile may feel like they've outgrown their position but aren't ready to commit to being members. We've tried to create something for folks who love to be here (and who wouldn't?) but know they aren't going to be around forever.

Residents have many of the rights and responsibilities of members. They act as free agents in our local economy and can join the Dancing Rabbit Vehicle Co-op, Eating Associate Program, and rent a warren to live on. They can hold down jobs within the community or outside. They are invited to participate fully in meetings, except for the ability to block consensus decisions. In addition, they are also asked to hold to the Covenants (our ecological guidelines) and be available to give and get interpersonal feedback.

We hope that this new status will allow for growth and diversity in our ranks. It can allow people to experiment with whether they can make a living for themselves here doing demolition and if they can adjust to the climate and geography before emotionally committing to making the change. For 2000, we are primarily accepting Residents for the warmer months, as the winter housing we can offer is very limited.

And we are proud to say our first Resident will be our new Garden Coordinator, Don Persons!

We Want You!

We obviously want to meet all kinds of committed eco-pioneers. But we are actively encouraging folks with the following characteristics or skills (with an eye towards becoming a resident and member) to visit:
Women
Auto mechanics
People of color
Biodiesel producers
Office workers
We are also looking for:
Middle aged folks
Skilled laborers
Natural builders
Queer folks
Prairie and tree restorationists
