I Represent The Element Water
by Jan Ankney
[Read in our Land Day ritual this past October, where
we usually start by inviting the elements to join us.]
This ecovillage is in the northern upper Mississippi
River basin. Water in this region generally flows from the northwest,
southeast to the Mississippi river. The watersheds make diagonal stripes
across the county. From northeast to southwest these are named:
Fox River
Upper Little Fox River
North Wyaconda River
South Wyaconda river
Bear Creek- this watershed includes South Gorin (South
Gorin was once called Gorin, but the name was changed.)
North Fabius River- this watershed includes Memphis and
Rutledge
Tobin Creek
Upper Middle Fabius River
A history of the names of the Fabius River:
Fabiane
Fabian
Fabin
Ferbien
Fabba
Faba
Faby
Fabius
The North Fabius River is 105 miles long, having its
source in southern Iowa. It joins the Middle and South Fabius Rivers,
and for only a few miles is it one River, the Fabius, before it empties
into the Mississippi near West Quincy.
Our bodies are 60% water; our brains, 70%. There are
rivers within us, flowing from our hearts, sending branches to the neck and
head, the arms, the legs, in ever smaller channels, then regrouping
reforming, flowing together, up again and to the heart.
I speak of Water, which always seeks the lowest place.
[At this point the speaker raises a glass of water and
pours a bit onto the ground.]
Water [light, soft] voice: I am poured out! I fall to
the ground.
Harsh voice: You have been brought low; you suffer
defeat!
Water voice: I know nothing of defeat. I am taking the
shape of your sandal.
Harsh voice: I tread upon you!
Water voice: There is dirt here; I have made a bit of
mud. Mud has now stuck to your sandal. There are seeds here. I can help
them grow.
Just so is Water, flowing ever lower, yet wearing away
rocks, bringing forth life.
