At Dancing Rabbit we are committed to ending our reliance on fossil fuels and using renewable resources for our transportation. The first step towards this is minimizing our needs. We have designed our village to be pedestrian and bicycle friendly and we are working to create income opportunities that do not require commuting by motorized vehicles. We do a lot of biking and walking to stuff nearby and we try to combine vehicle trips whenever possible. We have also created a car co-op to own and maintain all our motorized vehicles, thus minimizing our vehicle needs and encouraging sharing and a coordinated effort at sustainable fuels.
Currently we have focused on biodiesel as our primary alternative fuel. Biodiesel is made from vegetable oil making it a renewable fuel which does not contribute to global warming. Biodiesel can even be made from waster vegetable oil from deep fat fryers, thus making it a recycled product. One major benefit of biodiesel over other alternative fuels (eg ethanol, electricity, hydrogen) is that it requires a minimum of vehicle conversion. Biodiesel can be run in an essentially unmodified diesel engine and can be mixed in any proportion with petro-diesel.
Currently we run all our vehicles on 100% biodiesel. We are still working out some of the kinks in that system so occasionally must resort to petro-diesel. As we work out the bugs we will be publishing more on our website about how to make 100% biodiesel work for you. See our page on biodiesel winterization.
Currently we purchase our biodiesel from a commercial manufacturer. We hope to continue our experiments in producing our own biodiesel from local waster vegetable oil, and eventually produce all our fuel onsite.
