Juan here, writing the Dancing Rabbit column for the first time. As it turns out, I chose a rather busy time to start. Many small changes have been going on here as the seasons shift and Dancing Rabbit gears up for winter.
The weather's been unusually friendly to us this week. Sunshine and moderate temperatures have helped keep the Ultimate Frisbee games going. Nevertheless, people have begun to take stock of their winter supplies. Canned goods are being sorted, and firewood is being cut and gathered. Even our newest arrivals have secured piles of wood to keep themselves comfortable in the coming months. In the back of our minds, we all know that 60 degrees will soon be but a memory. There have already been some talks about playing basketball in Rutledge when it gets too cold for outdoor sports, though what constitutes "too cold" varies a great deal from Rabbit to Rabbit.
On Tuesday, Tom and Tereza held a small Open House in their new home, affectionately known as Bella-Wow. There were snacks and drinks, and much warmth, both physical and emotional. The house was built primarily by Dan and Tom, Dan having since gone on sabbatical to pursue employment possibilities. It was wonderful for me to see the culmination of such an intense amount of effort -- a warm and friendly home.
Much activity has also been seen in Skyhouse this week. A milestone was reached in the construction of the upstairs bathroom, as the sinks were finally installed. Those of us who live in Skyhouse are happy to be able to brush our teeth upstairs.
Also, Nemo and Dweezil, Dancing Rabbit's two feline members, were the beneficiaries of a second Skyhouse project; a platform-and-ramp structure now links the bedroom they share with Amy and myself to the upstairs deck. They've already figured out the cat-door in Amy's window, and can now frequently be seen watching passers-by in the courtyard below.
As the weekend approached and my thoughts were on entertaining my visiting father, most other Rabbits were thinking about what to wear. A costume dance party was held on Saturday night in the Common House, marking the beginning of the Halloween celebrations. A Samhein ritual is planned for sundown on Monday, and after dinner marks the start of Hollerween, an ongoing party that moves from house to house, gathering people and treats along the way. I, for one, am really looking forward to this particular Dancing Rabbit tradition.
Finally, our November visitors, Sunshine, Steven, and two-month-old Xavier, arrived on Sunday night around dinner time. I got to talk to them for a little while, and I hope they enjoy their week as our last official visitors for 2005.
From all of us here at Dancing Rabbit, we offer you warm wishes as the weather gets colder.
