by Rachel Katz Greetings! Susan Brown here, filling in for
Rachel, as she was in Champaign-Urbana most of this
week, along with Tony and Tamar, being
guests-in-residence at the university there. We were
all happy to welcome them home-- a week away from
Dancing Rabbit seems like such a long time! I returned
from my brother's wedding in Kalamazoo, Michigan
(which was wonderful, by the way) after only four days
away, and it felt like I'd missed so much.
So we're all gearing up for Land Day, this
Saturday, Oct. 6th. We'll be hosting an Open House,
with tours every half hour between 1 and 4 pm. We hope
lots of Democrat readers will come visit. If you came
last year, you should come again to see all the
progress we've made on our buildings and gardens. You
can also check out our newly refurbished biodiesel
area, outdoor kitchen, solar power systems, and more.
And of course if you've never been out for a tour, you
can see in person all the exciting people and places
you read about in this column.
Our canning slowed down somewhat this week. Don
counted all the beans we've canned so far this season
(including dilly beans) and proudly announced the
grand total: more than 250 quarts! We'll be very happy
to have them this winter, I'm sure. On the down side,
our tomatoes didn't do so well this season. We'd love
to know if anyone has unsprayed tomatoes that they'd
be willing to donate or sell to us.
Further highlights this week included a classical
music appreciation night, a dance party in our indoor
kitchen on Friday night, and a Saturday night out. We
went bowling at Scotland County Lanes, where Brendan
and Don were our high scorers. I couldn't bowl, but I
sure enjoyed the curly fries and root beer. After
that some of us stopped by the Social to play some
pool and hang out. It was good to see some of the
folks we met last time, and hope they all come to Land
Day.
Alline was still out of town, but a radio
interview with her aired on KMEM on Friday. Maybe some
of you heard it. We're happy she helped get the word
out about DR and our Open House.
Kurt and our trusty crew of construction interns
started insulating the ceiling in the Milkweed
cottage, putting sheet rock and bales up. I was
excited that the interns also wanted to help work on
the plaster on Bella Ciao, the small building I live
in. They worked on the scratch coat by hand for a
while, which is quite labor intensive. They then
decided to try harling the back wall, by adding a lot
more water to the plaster mix, and throwing it at the
wall with special harling trowels. Megan, Aubrey and
Shannon are also sculpting a sun and moon design into
the plaster on the sides. It looks great and I'm happy
to think that we might finish plastering my house
before it gets too cold.
Many of us are still playing soccer once or twice
a week. One game this week was notable for the high
number of players (and injuries-- ouch! No one was
hurt badly, mostly just bruises and strains). I keep
hoping to improve my soccer skills, but in the
meantime I'm having fun kicking at people's shins. (By
accident, of course.) ((Sorry, Tom.))
Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage is a nonprofit
residential community that demonstrates ecological
sustainability in Rutledge, MO. Don't forget Land Day
open house, Sat. Oct 6th, tours between 1 and 4pm. You
can always reach us at (660) 883-5511.
