This is Nicole. Life has been extra peaceful and quiet at Dancing Rabbit,
as many folks have been out traveling during the past couple weeks. Those
who stayed behind have been finding ways to entertain ourselves and keep
busy. Thomas and I were in Pekin, IL visiting his parents until last
Wednesday, and since I’m too lazy to find out what happened in our absence,
I’ll fill you in on what’s been going on since then.
On Wednesday night there was a peace vigil to remember those who have been
killed in Iraq. It was inspired by and in solidarity with the peace
rallies at Camp Casey, in Crawford, Texas, a gathering organized by a mother
who lost her son, Casey, in Iraq in 2004.
Several people went to Kahoka on Friday to enjoy the bluegrass festival
there. I hear the music was top-notch. Tereza’s favorite part was the
clogging. She now has hopes of starting a NEMO multicultural clogging
troupe. Dare to dream, Tereza!
It seems like the dance bug that bit Tereza has been preying on other folks
as well. On Saturday, there was an intimate dance soiree at Skyhouse,
attended by Rabbits and Sandhillers. People had such a smashing time that
there are tentative plans to host such gatherings on a regular basis. On
Sunday night, I walked in to the common house to find Jennifer, Cynder, and
Toren cutting a rug (without a rug) to the tunes of Jennifer’s youth.
On Friday we said goodbye to our last remaining intern, Zack. He is
embarking on an epic roadtrip to Oregon to visit a friend and to catch a
glimpse of the ocean for the first time. The All Star Summertime Rugged
Outdoor Kitchen Co-op is falling apart without him. Fortunately, Zack plans
to return for a visit in early September to regale us with stories of his
adventures in the West.
Speaking of adventures, last week Tom ventured into a deep, dark, scary
abandoned well on the property to retrieve bricks for Dan’s porch. It seems
like he spent a whole day climbing down there, pulling out the bricks, and
carting them over to Dan’s house. Dan’s still needs some more to complete
the porch, so if you’ve got used smooth solid clay bricks without mortar or
with mortar that can be removed easily, and you’d like to sell them, give
Dan a call at 660-883-5511.
