Population on the farm remains low, with lots of members gone. But
we've had lots of interesting visitors including Brad and Julie from San
Francisco. They are old friends who may come out for a season next year
to help us out in construction. Brad is an architect and is looking
forward to experiencing the physical side of his job. We also enjoyed a
visit on Saturday from Chris, Karri and Abi Feeney.
Almost every day has had some exciting event happening. On Wednesday
interns Alexis and Tamar and I traveled to a remnant prairie near
Unionville owned by the Morris'. On Thursday night, Sandhill hosted a
going away party for their intern Kathleen. She requested a contra dance
party. The music was supplied by Don on the guitar, Cecil on the
trombone, Tamar on the fiddle and Jeffrey on the hammer dulcimer. Becca
from Sandhill called steps for the first time and did a fabulous job. On
Friday a crowd of folks headed down to Saint Louis for the protest at
Mansanto's headquarters regarding genetically modified organisms, in
defense of organic and family farms.
On a sad note, Tony had to fly to Houston, TX for a funeral. His
sister Michele had a baby girl who was born with a malformed heart.
We all send our condolences.
The garden is just bursting with tomatoes and green beans. A crew
spent all day canning and ended up with over 100 quart jars. We also are
harvesting my favorite summer vegetable, edible soybeans (also known
around here as butterbeans or edamame).
Our visitor Susan was accepted as a resident for the fall. She is
living here for awhile to see whether she'd like to move here full
time. We hope she will.
We welcome folks to come by for a tour Saturdays at 1pm, but please
call first at 883-5511.
