So many visitors came here this week one could walk around and see lots of
folks whose names one didn't know. Two of Brian's friends from the
University of Rhode Island visited. Derek and Kerstin from Zuni Mountain
community in New Mexico visited for a week. My friend Denis came to scout
out Dancing Rabbit as a location for a movie he is making next summer. He
brought Jessica and Jeff, who will be part of the team making the movie.
We also had a dozen students from the College of DuPage, outside of
Chicago, visit for the weekend. They helped plaster Bella Ciao, cook and
stack firewood.
This was another week of leaving. Sol and Cedar, who were both members
here, left to explore other options in their yellow VW bus. We'll see them
when they visit for sorghum season at Sandhill, but we wish them luck in
their journey. Construction intern Elizabeth left and soon after Susan and
Tom both left to visit family. However, Kurt has returned home from his
visit to California and we sure missed him!
This was a week of culture. We had both a regular singalong and a choral
singing night, where we learned the difficult Latin psalm Exultate Justi in
Domino. Werner, the professor of the visiting class, performed a one man
play written by Kafka. Neighbor Abbie Clatt came for her first fiddle
lesson taught by Tamar. We've got lots of talented musicians here and can
also offer lessons in trombone, bass guitar and voice.
Plenty of vegetables have been coming out of the garden, meaning we've had
some delicious dinners. And creative ones, too. Cecil and a crew he led
cooked up ethiopian food, served in a traditional manner, such that flat
bread was used as both plate and utentsil. More vegetables also means
food processing. We started our first batch of sauerkraut of the year and
canned some sweet corn.
Folks have been busy doing construction. We're finally getting it together
to finish the plaster on the outside of Bella Ciao. Tamar finished the
flashing on the timberframe, giving it a more finished look. And folks are
working on the first floor of Skyhouse.
One evening members gathered with newer folks to go on a visioning walk.
They talked about where future buildings and roads will go, and what the
plans are for the growth of our community.
Megan and I attended the planning meeting for the Rutledge Fall Festival,
which will take place September 15th. We are organizing the volleyball
tournament, so start thinking about your teams.
We have some very sad news to report. Some of you met one of our interns
from last year named Minna, as she regularly attended the New Testament
Church in Rutledge. A few weeks ago, she went on a bike ride from her home
in California and never returned. Her friends and family have put together
huge search efforts, but no one has found a trace of her. You can find out
more about it from www.findminna.org. We all send our well wishes to her
family.
