We were much entertained by the performance of the Memphis Community
Players. So many of us went, we took up a whole row of the middle section
of the theater and then some. Jeffrey made it just in time after dropping
off Cecil in Kirksville. Cecil left to catch a plane to Fort Lauderdale,
FL last minute to see his grandfather during his final hours. We all send
our condolences to the Scheib family.
There have been lots of other trips this week. Our intern Nim returned to
her family in NY. Tamar went on a little vacation and Brian returned from
his. Sol and Cedar will be leaving the community in the Fall and bought
the VW Vanagon from our vehicle cooperative. They went down to Columbia to
get some service on it, and brought Sara and Susan Brown with them to visit
folks down there. Sara will be returning with her dog, Isis.
Speaking of our vehicle cooperative, let me tell you a little bit about it.
One of our agreements is that members don't own private vehicles. We
established the Dancing Rabbit Vehicle Cooperative so that we are
encouraged to share trips and so that its easier to run our vehicles on
alternative fuels. We all share the responsibility of taking care of our
cars and we pay based on how many miles we drive. It may feel like it cost
more per trip, but we each do not have to pay for keeping up a car or the
insurance. So it actually costs each of us less than owning our own cars.
Allegra, a friend of the community, visited for a few days with her friend
Michael. They are on tour as How You Duo, an old-time and bluegrass band,
and they graced us with a concert one night. Sandhill came over to enjoy
the music and Alline held a bake sale of yummy gooey desserts.
Many folks enjoyed going to the Dog and Gun. A few of our interns
volunteered at the Fire Department's booth on Friday and had all the pop
they could drink. New people always come back a bit dazed and overwhelmed,
but we got lots of things we needed.
We actually remembered that this Tuesday was the day to have a community
lunch in Rutledge and Alline, Tony, Cecil, Jeffrey, Mukluk and myself all
went. But when we arrived, only Mary was there. Maybe it was too hot for
everyone else? We had a nice time talking to Mary and brainstorming ideas
for the Rutledge Fall Festival.
We found out that Bryan Crowl's blueberry patch, at W and 15, was nearing
the end of its season and we gathered a crew to go and pick. We picked 77
pounds in 1.5 hours. Then the next day Alline led a food processing crew
and canned 18 quarts of pie filling and 25 pints of jam. Whatever was left
we dehydrated or just ate. We'll be happy this winter!
We were all relieved when the hot weather broke, and people really got to
work on the buildings. Enclosing the second floor of Skyhouse is happening
quickly. And Kurt got the soffits finished on the Milkweed cottage.
Interns and residents wanted to learn more about the vision behind Dancing
Rabbit. So members, residents and interns gathered to share stories about
the history of Dancing Rabbit and discuss ideas about what the future might
hold.
