Hi. This Alline Anderson sitting in for Rachel
Katz.
Well, our little world was rocked this week as
bulldozing began on Woerhle Road (at Smith). While we
knew it was coming we had no idea how extensive the
clearing work would be. It's been quite sad to see the
trees and undergrowth dozed down to bare earth 40'
from the road. We'll miss the bluebirds, the
columbines and asters we used to see on our walks.
However, now that the roadside is wide open without
any tree cover, it looks like a perfect site for tall
grass prairie restoration! I'm visualizing purple cone
flowers, black-eyed Susans, compass plant, sunflowers,
and more. Hmmmm.....
On a happier note, Kurt and Tony led a crew putting in
the first bales in Skyhouse! It was under the guise of
a seminar, kind of Huck Finn-sytle. Participating were
Laurel, Scott, Tamar, Tom, Elizabeth and Rainbow.
Roger and Lisa continue to lead other crews on
Skyhouse, and the work is progressing wonderfully.
Relatives and friends continue to flock to Dancing
Rabbit, which we love. We not only enjoy meeting the
important folks in our intern's lives, but love
showing off Dancing Rabbit, too. This week we got to
meet Elizabeth (aka Mukluk) Henry's aunt MarJo, uncle
Paul and cousin John from Indianapolis. Phil Shapiro,
the father of Emily (aka 'Nim"), another intern, came
down from upstate New York for the weekend. And even
our visitors are having visitors; Angelina and Jon
hosted her mom and step-father. They made a pilgrimage
to El Jimador in Kirksville for fajitas, and were not
disappointed.
Rachel and Cecil took the train down to Kansas City to
visit William Jewell College where they met with an
Environmental Ethics class. A few days later Jeffrey
and Susan picked them up in LaPlata and helped the
rest of us by doing all of our Kirksville of errands.
Best of all were the bagels and cream cheese they
brought home for breakfast the next day!
One of our newest interns, Megan R., is a classically
trained violinist. She's making her transition to
'fiddler' under the tutelage of Tamar, our Fiddle
Queen. We have hopes she'll join Don, Cecil and Tamar
in our contra-dance band. Our former interns Scott and
Laurel are back from visiting Scott's relatives in
Florida. They have upgraded their status to 'resident'
and will be staying a few more weeks. We're glad to
have them back - we've missed their energy and
enthusiasm.
In other news, Jeffrey led an evening or choral
singing, and had ten folks belting their hearts out,
including two who walked over from Sandhill. The
evening's challenges included a Macedonian piece and a
spiritual. It's so fun walking by when there's a
singing night - the sounds emanating from Jeffrey's
house are beautiful! Susan Wright had another smashing
bake sale, and our intern Aaron came back from a quick
trip to Iowa City (and new student orientation). He'll
be living in a co-op there and is looking forward to
it.
