Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage

by Brad Jacobson

Our rabbit world was shaken this week by a blast of heavenly electricity, sizzling our solar energy systems, and leaving us trembling in our tents, teepees, and timber frames. The lighting strike hit Tuesday night in the middle of our village, knocking out our power for the rest of the week. As of this writing we are waiting for our inverters to return from Wisconsin where they are being repaired.

Some things don't seem to work as well without electricty.Take power tools, for example. We prodded and pleaded with them but no dice. Needless to say our construction scene on Skyhouse suffered drastically and the roofing materials that we have stored underneath the second floor deck remain patiently waiting for their time in the sun. On the bright side, we got a tremendous amount of earth plastering done on the exteriors of some of the straw bale buildings, using hand and feet powered by the delicious food that comes out of our kitchen.

Speaking of delicious foods, on Sunday night Cecil and Sara, our new gardeing intern from Columbia, MO, hosted a restaurant-style chinese food dinner complete with menus, waiters, and guitar serenades. Dishes includedhunan tofu, miso soup, spicy fried rice, and lemonade. The service was expecially noted to be excellent. Four stars.

The week's drama continued past the lighting storm, with several mishaps, injuries, and near disaster's involving the dreaded automobile. Emily sprained her ankle teaching Susan how to swing dance when one of her swings got a bit too swingy. Don and Stan got their car stuck in a ditch 4 miles from here at 1 am on Saturday night after a long tiring drive after a long tiring stint inpecting organic farms in Illinois. Luckily they and the car survived fully intact. Baloo, our trusty stick-fetcher, got hit by a car at 6 am one morning and was rushed a few hours later to the vet in Kirksville. Thankfully he is on the road to recovery and profiting greatly from the natural healing methods practiced by many of our residents!

On a lighter note, Kalen and Brian treated us to a magical puppet show on Thursday night based loosely on the twin themes of "Post-Ecological Flamboyance" and "Entropy vs. the Institution". Brian debuted his much-anticipated Monster puppet and shared a rousing duet of the Puppy Song with Cecil on guitar. Kalen introduced his cute little Professor along with that pesky Bat. The smurfs also made a special appearence. The critics raved.
