Wowee! Just when we thought things were calming down a bit, we had a
packed weekend. Besides our normal crowd, we had several visitors. Four
folks came from Peoria to spend a few days and see how they like it
here. Our intern Elizabeth's cousin and her boyfriend stopped by on their
travels and our intern Emily's 3 friends from Omaha spent the weekend.
Then we had our new crop of interns show up. Aubrey, from southern
Utah, is our new herbs and wildcrafting intern. Sarah, from Columbia, MO, has
come to help in the garden. The other two of our new interns have the
same names of two interns who are already here. So we're doing a bit of
nicknaming. Our new Emily is going to go by Nim and she's a construction intern from Albany, NY. And our new intern Elizabeth is lucky enough to
keep her name and the other Elizabeth, from the Yukon, is going by Mukluk full time.
We also have two Susan's these days and are pondering that if one has
the name Susan Wright, should we call the other Susan Wrong? Susan Reed?
Susan Left? Cast your votes.
Our last, but not least, new arrival is resident Rose Grande. She
visited us early in the spring from Madison, WI and now Rose is checking out if
she'd like to live with us. I like her so much already, I'm hoping
she'll decide to stay.
We're also missed a few members this weekend. Tony is in North Carolina
at a community called Earthaven. They are hosting the board meeting for the
nonprofit the Fellowship for Intentional Community and both Tony and
Laird from Sandhill are there as members. Alline and Kurt went to Chicago for
the weekend for the huge annual book fair that happens there. We look
forward to Alline returning with box loads of books that she gathered
from authors who are there promoting their new releases.
It was Don's birthday and Bekka came over from Sandhill with two delicious vegan chocolate cakes with fresh strawberries on top and we all joined
in to celebrate. Thanks Bekka!
On Saturday night, Sandhill hosted a dance party and bonfire to
celebrate the (near) completion of their new residence. We enjoyed the cookies,
music and company. And have been pleasantly surprised to learn that some of
our interns are fabulous dancers!
We've also had fun in the evenings with a game night (playing Scrabble,
Hearts and Dictionary) a singalong, and a raucous packed sewing night.
With all the nasty weather, things have been moving slowly with outside
work. But people having been plugging away at the inside of Kurt and
Alline's residence. Tamar moved into the loft of the timberframe. And
the gardeners have been out there rain or shine hilling potatoes, weeding
and the like. In a break in the weather, the nice boys from Raytek in
Memphis came down and installed gutters on Allium and the timberframe. Those
buildings are looking more finished all the time.
