Our population seems to have finally stabilized for a week or two. Sol and
Brad both went east to visit family and friends for a week. Member Susan
finally returned from California. We're so glad to have her back. And our
old intern Stephanie came by to spend a week or two with us.
We've been making serious progress on redoing the plaster on the outside of
Allium. And Kurt and Alline's house has been quickly gaining stairs and a
second floor. The garden crew has planted flowers along the paths to be
later dried and braided into garlic.
We've been watching the birds raise their families. Alline spotted sparrow
fledglings begging food from their parents and Don witnessed the same
behavior in some robins. We've found some interesting nests which we've
identified as from chipping sparrows and catbirds.
But the weather has been so cold, we haven't been able to work outside as
much as we like. And eating our meals in the outdoor kitchen has been a
test of our endurance. Who would have guessed last week when the weather
was 90 degrees and humid that we'd be walking around in jackets and tuques
(the Canadian word for knit winter caps).
So we focused on fun instead. We had a skating party at the Rollerena in
Kahoka and had a record 27 attendees between us and Sandhill. We boogied
down to our own choice of music and met some new friends, all under the age
of 10.
It was our land management intern, Elizabeth's, birthday on Friday. She'd
earlier played a practical joke where she had convinced people that she had
won the title of Miss Yukon (her home territory in Canada). So for her
birthday we staged a Miss Yukon exhibition, complete with tuques, mukluks
(arctic boots), long underwear and pictures of the Yukon.
Several of our interns like to run and they formed a new weekly runner's
club. It was a success and afterwards they jumped into the chilly pond to
cool off. Many found it too cold, but our intern from the great North
found it quite pleasant.
Our resident Susan tried out a new money making idea. She hosted an
organic bake sale, including vegan chocolate chip cookies and brownies with
butter and eggs or vegan. They were delicious and she quickly sold out.
We had some interesting trips to town. Don attended the auction at the
high school in Memphis and came home with 8 gallon cooking pots. Jeffrey
and Tony caught a ride with him to meet with Chris Feeney about the website
for the Democrat. Jeffrey, Megan and Tamar carpooled to see Edwin Herr, the
chiropractor in Gorin. We really like patronizing family-owned businesses
and were pleased to discover friendly shops like Mona's Frame Shop in
Memphis and Northeast Camera in Kirksville.
