Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage
Ted here bringing you all the news from Dancing Rabbit this week. After several weeks of blissfully warm, summery weather, folks here have been a little quiet and not quite as elated in the past few days since the cold front came through from the north. There was furtive talk about the possibility of frost damage, and we did suffer a bit in Ironweed garden, mostly in the form of some brassica leaves and shoots on our newly planted "hardy" kiwis. But all have survived, and I for one am trying to believe that that'll be the last of the frost. And none too soon, since our greenhouse is bursting at the seems with all the warm weather veggies and flowers waiting to get out into the garden!

Skyhouse has been making excellent headway on its new garden fence and also its second floor deck, in large part thanks to the efforts of Apple, who is visiting from Twin Oaks community in Virginia. The garden fence posts are old osage posts which came from Johnnie Erickson in Edina, who had a big pile of old posts he kindly offered us. Ironweed just put in their last two posts as well, completing their garden's new shape. All of us love the organic shape of the posts, greatly preferable to metal ones.

Tony and Rachel ventured east to New York to visit family, while Sara and I visited friends in Columbia before putting Sara on a bus to Tennessee to assist at a friend's birth. Tamar's mother Eva visited to the delight of all, and then Tamar departed with her mother to visit family in the Massachusetts. Thomas returned by bicycle from Illinois, and Nathan visited for the weekend. Saddest of all comings and goings in the past week, though, was sending Stefanie and Arjen off for a year of visiting communities in Europe. They departed for the east coast with Nicole and Jeffrey, and were then to board the Queen Mary II bound for England. We wish them well, and hope they're enjoying a bit of shuffleboard while crossing the Atlantic!

Our visitors this week were a great help in several gardens while the weather held out, and we wish them well in their next adventures. Speaking of adventures, Alyson and our other Red Earth Farms compatriots have been seen carting (literally) furniture and other necessaries out to their chosen spots on their new land, and we look forward to celebrating with them in the next couple weeks. Finally, we're just in the process of narrowing down the applicants for this year's internship program, and are very excited to meet our new arrivals come the first of June. Here's to a productive year!

That's it from DR this week, but this cold weather feels like the calm before the storm. Look forward to a burst of activity with the passing of the last frost date....
