We are very lucky to welcome our ex-intern Mark back. He came back from
Minneapolis (maybe because its still cold up there!) and its almost like he
never left. He's been hard at work building Skyhouse, with the builders
Roger and Lisa, as well as Tony, Tamar, and Brad. They put the second
bent up and are now working on some roof trusses. Tony is still looking
for more used 2' X 6's that are at least 9' or 14' long. If you have some
to sell, give us a call.
They've been debating which color tin to get for the roof. They're
considering blue, but worried about the solar heat gain from a non-white
roof. If you have a blue roof and an opinion to share, don't be shy!
When they weren't working on Skyhouse, Brad, Mark and Tony finished the
cedar siding on Allium, the load bearing straw bale cabin I live in. And
once it got warm they got out the buckets of clay and sand and mixed some
plaster for repairs.
Our first intern, Megan joined us. She came from her folks' place in
Philadelphia, though she's been living in California. She has come to
learn gardening and she's been toiling in the garden with Don, planting
like crazy.
With all the new people, we decided to have a "fun week". We had group
work parties during the day and fun group activities at night. After our
weekly dinner with Sandhill, we had a singalong. With Brad here we now
have three guitarists and between the three of them they know just about
every song we can think up. We took a walk around our land on Saturday
morning, showing new folks the flora and fauna, as well as our conservation
projects. We also went bowling in Memphis one evening. Because of his
tendonitis, Tony had to bowl with his feet. He got a 37. Not bad for his
first time!
On the way to bowl, a whole crew of folks stopped by the house of Jack and
Darlene Dannenhauer to pick up the hot tub they donated to us. It'll take
a little work to get it up and running, but we'll be soaking in the
moonlight soon enough.
Saturday was the first night of the Jewish holiday, Passover. We had our
own version of the traditional dinner, which is called a seder. Its during
this time that Jews tell the story of Moses leading the Jews out of slavery
in Egypt and have a meal which incorporates many symbols from the story.
Jeffrey and Laird went to Kirksville to play bridge and Jeffrey won. We
are all proud of him. Tamar, Megan, Tony and I hitched a ride with them
and caught a movie. Then we enjoyed hanging out in Washington St Java Co,
eating treats and seeing some of our Kirksville friends.
Many of us went to vote on Tuesday. We've been voting so many times this
year that we're getting really friendly with the folks who run the election
at the Rutledge Community Center. I missed Opal Blaine in her usual spot
and heard she was sick. I hope she's feeling better.
Its really spring now, isn't it? The crocuses have come up and everything
is turning green. With the weather we've had though, I start to worry
whether we'll skip straight to summer and miss spring altogether.
I've been busy as can be getting ready for my trip to China with Tony and
his parents. Wish me luck! Brad will be taking over the column for the
next few weeks until I return.
