Thanks to Alline for writing the column. I've been away more often than
not, so I've been unable to write regularly, and certainly don't know
what's been going on to write about it. I'm actually writing now from New
York, where I'm visiting my family. I'm having a really nice time with not
only my parents and brother, but also my cousins, their kids and the rest.
Next week it will be Alline's turn again, as I'll be in Columbus, OH at
another music conference.
Jeffrey, Cecil, Tony and I headed out to Champaign-Urbana, IL for a few
days. Our friend Bob lives there and his employer hired us to do a little
of the computer programming they didn't have time to do. We had a good
time meeting folks there and hope to continue our working relationship with
them.
Jeffrey, Tony and Cecil have been very busy with the computer, recently.
Chris hired them to do the website for the Memphis Democrat. It will be
unveiled soon! Then the Scotland County Business Professionals invited us
to one of their meetings, at the Social. Tony and Cecil gave a
presentation about the Internet and offered to help Scotland County
businesses get onto the Web. Then they were interviewed by Rick and
broadcast on KMEM. I enjoyed getting to meet all the business owners in
town and attach faces to some of the names.
On the same trip, Tony and I got our immunizations for our upcoming trip to
China. We'll be spending three weeks there with Tony's parents and a tour
group.
We had a weekend-long follow up to our yearly retreat, where we took a look
at how well our predictions for the year are going. It reminded me that on
my list of things to do is building a solar powered hot tub. So if anyone
out there has a hot tub where the the motor is broken or they don't want it
anymore, please give me a call at 883-5511. We'll put it to good use! We
can't work hard all day without having some ways to relax our tired muscles.
We chose our interns for the upcoming year. Alline worked particularly
hard at interviewing and selecting the applicants. We had so many
applications this year that we got to be as picky as we wanted. It was sad
to turn so many people away. But we have a roster of about a dozen folks
from all over North America coming to work here this summer.
Kurt has been working hard with folks at Sandhill gathering maple sap and
making maple syrup. The first batch just got finished, at the same time
that we were finishing the last quart from last year.
Don has been busy planting and babying the seedlings. Its fun to watch him
poring over the flats, warming them with heating pads and watering them
carefully.
We've been graced with some fabulous bird sightings recently. A kestrel
has been hanging out in our little cluster of straw bale houses. We saw a
bluebird the other day. And Tony and Don witnessed an in air fight between
what we think was a prairie falcon and a kestrel.
We had a visit of four folks from Truman State University for a day and
they helped load firewood. Our friends Stephanie and Kit, both students
from Truman State, stopped by for an afternoon, as well.
Its been getting quieter and quieter though. Jeffrey left for a long trip
to visit his family in Atlanta, GA, and friends in Amherst, MA. I've left
town for a bit, and Kurt and Alline spent the weekend in Canton, MO at Dan
and Nancy's, helping them prune their apple orchard. Its going to be a big
change when all of our spring visitors, interns and potential members come
in early April!
