Hi everyone! This is Alline filling in for Rachel.
This week she’s in Seattle at the Folk Alliance
Conference. During the day she’s in seminars learning
about booking and managing folk musicians; in the
evenings musical performances go on into the wee
hours. We hear she’s looking forward to coming home so
she can get some sleep!
Ann Shrader of Sandhill is back in Rutledge for a
visit, which makes us all really happy. We had a dance
party to celebrate. For refreshments Jess made a Wacky
Cake in the shape of a rabbit, and topped it off with
a yummy raspberry glaze. What the heck is a Wacky
Cake? It’s the easiest, fastest, incredibly delicious
cake you’ll ever make Don introduced us to it a few
months ago, and it has quickly become one of our
favorites. I’ve included the recipe at the end of this
article for your dining pleasure.
Alline and Jess continue to test the theory of gravity
and the density of ice by slipping and falling
whenever possible. Jess specializes in her
oh-so-graceful knee landing; Alline keeps working on
her patented wrist save. Needless to say they’re both
looking forward to sunnier and less slippery weather.
We had a visitor named Gare Calhoune this week, who was
unofficially crowned the ‘King of the Firewood.’ Gare
was pretty amazing on Monday he loaded and then
unloaded a truck full of firewood with Kurt, and on
Wednesday helped Don move another truckload of
firewood to our summer outdoor kitchen. Thanks for all
of your hard work, Gare!
Jeffrey travels to Kirksville each Wednesday night for
a meeting of the minds and a rousing game (or three)
of bridge. No matter how the game goes, he returns
home cheerful, in his own inimitable Jeffrey style.
Saturday night Cecil joined some friends at the
Dukum’inn in Kirksville for an informal blues jam. He
rocked the house on bass guitar and trombone. While he
has not yet mastered the art of playing them both at
the same time, it is probably just as well. His next
scheduled performance is at the Rutledge Fall
Festival.
Here’s the recipe you’ve all been waiting for.
Wacky Cake (aka “Look Mom, No Eggs! Cake”)
Whisk together:
5c. flour
1c. ‘sweet’ (we recommend Sandhill sorghum or honey)
1c. oil
2 tsp. salt
4 tsp. baking soda
2 TB. vinegar
dash vanilla
enough water to make it batter.
Pour into a greased and floured 9” x 13” pan. Bake for
20 minutes in a preheated 350 oven. When cool, top
with your favorite frosting or fruit compote. To make
a chocolate Wacky Cake, add about ¼ c. cocoa or carob.
Told you it was easy! Guaranteed no leftovers.
